Pilou Asbæk plays Rune, who arrives at Horsens State Prison, Denmark’s roughest prison, to serve a conviction of assault. If Rune wants to survive in this world, he has to find his place in the internal hierarchy. In a world, where bars and the thick walls of the prison isolate him from the outside world, and blood stains on walls and floors denote a brutal world order, Rune is reduced to being a number and a letter: R.

”Formidable Danish debut – “R” is one of the most stylish, orignial and raw Danish films in a very long time ”, Børsen
The screening of R is followed by a conversation with one of the film’s directors, Michael Noer, and will regard his collaboration with his co-director, Tobias Lindholm.
Michael Noer has a past in directing documentaries and has earlier on made the documentaries ‘Vesterbro’ and ‘De vilde hjerter’. Tobias Lindholm is an educated scriptwriter and has written scripts for Thomas Vinterberg’s ‘Submarino’ and numerous episodes of the DR TV shows, ‘Sommer’ and ‘Borgen’.
The story of R came to Tobias Lindholm, when a friend was sentenced 4 years in prison; thus, Lindholm followed him and his life as an inmate through letters and prison visits. Together, Noer and Lindholm have translated this story into a harsh and realistic prison-drama.
R won the main prize at the film festivals in Göteborg and Mumbai, and continued its award sweep at the Danish Robert and Bodil awards.
